Introduction

Welcome to India

Since April 1, 2026, the India e-Arrival Card has become mandatory online for all international travelers arriving in India by air. Previously available as an optional digital alternative, the electronic arrival card — commonly known as Air Suvidha — is now required to be completed online before departure at all international airports across India. The e-Arrival Card must be submitted within 72 hours before your arrival. It collects essential personal, travel, and health information to facilitate your passage through immigration. This formality is separate from the visa or e-Visa application process, which must be obtained independently.

Pandemic origin

Air Suvidha: from health card to India's national arrival card

Launched in August 2020 to track contacts during the pandemic, Air Suvidha never really disappeared. By 2026, it became the standard arrival card for all of aerial India.

2020-2022: health phase. Air Suvidha collected travel history, vaccination status, and a quarantine pledge. The portal newdelhiairport.in/airsuvidha processed millions of submissions per month during pandemic peaks.

2023-2025: transition. The Indian Health Ministry progressively transferred the tool to the Bureau of Immigration. Health questions were eased; flight and accommodation questions reinforced. The form left its original role to become a true arrival registration.

Since April 2026: mandatory for all. The e-Arrival Card / Air Suvidha is now required for all international travellers arriving by air, regardless of nationality or visa. The culmination of a long transition.

What about paper?

No paper version is handed out on board anymore. If you arrive without Air Suvidha, you will be redirected to a kiosk or dedicated officer at the airport, with possible 30-90 minute wait depending on volume.

Complementary procedures

Air Suvidha and Indian e-Visa: why you need both

Travellers' first confusion: thinking Air Suvidha replaces or includes the Indian e-Visa. Both documents are distinct, complementary, and equally mandatory.

The Indian e-Visa is issued by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) via indianvisaonline.gov.in. It is an entry authorization valid for several months or years depending on type (tourism, business, medical). It is obtained at least a week before departure.

Air Suvidha (e-Arrival Card) is issued by the Bureau of Immigration via the Air Suvidha portal. It is a pre-arrival declaration — flight, accommodation, health data — to be filed within 72 hours before arrival. It does not grant entry, it prepares processing.

Order of operations: 1) get the e-Visa (weeks ahead), 2) buy tickets, 3) at H-72 from arrival, file Air Suvidha entering your e-Visa number. Without a valid e-Visa, Air Suvidha cannot be validated.
